More than $60,000 worth of gift cards are being distributed to tornado-ravaged communities in Laurel and Pulaski counties, thanks to donors who responded to Father Jim Sichko's 24-hour challenge.

Tornado survivors in Laurel and Pulaski are receiving tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of gift cards, courtesy of a challenge issued by a Lexington priest. Father Jim Sichko is a papal missionary of mercy and evangelist for the Diocese of Lexington. He said he selected several types of gift cards he knew would be useful to victims of the May 16th tornado.

“I just put it online, just 24 hours, put it on my social media, and lo and behold, it turned out over $60,000 worth of gift cards had been purchased.”

Sichko said the reaction of people he’s delivered the gift cards to is touching.

“They humbly receive the gift, are thankful for it, and truly are, in a state of saying, you know, ‘Are you sure that I should receive this?’ And, ‘Yes, you should.’”

Sichko said some went to St. Williams Catholic Church and First Baptist Church in London. Tuesday, he brought ten-thousand dollars’ worth of gift cards to Catholic Charities in Lexington, which will distribute them.
