Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin told a gathering of U.S. and Chinese officials that he’s not worried about the trade dispute between the countries. Bevin said although tariffs are causing pain, they won’t last.
Amid an escalating trade dispute, the National Governors’ Association brought Chinese and U.S. officials together for a Governor's Collaboration Summit in Lexington. Bevin recognized the impact tariffs are having on regional businesses, but said everyone will be better off as a result of trade negotiations. He said tariffs aren’t the solution, but they are useful negotiating tools.
“The most important thing is to make sure that trading agreements are proper, that the trading agreements are solid. That both sides get something and give something and that they are capable of lasting for years to come,” said Bevin.
Bevin said he thinks the Trump administration’s tactics are the right path, but businesses face uncertainty in the meantime.
Lining He agrees. He is the Vice President of Development for Two Rivers Fisheries in Wickliffe, Kentucky. He said the tariffs have harmed the potential of his business and others.
“The uncertainties are a big problem and many times they’re killing relationships and killing potential growth,” said He.
He said the tense relationship between China and the U.S. could slow down the whole economy. But, he’s confident that the two leaders will be able to work out the trade dispute soon.
