Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton and Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins discussed the city's recent designation as an All-America City by the National Civic League.

Lexington officials are celebrating the National Civic League’s designation as an All-America City. Mayor Linda Gorton and others held a news conference in city hall Monday to discuss the award. Gorton said city staffers, school district employees, high school students and others traveled to Denver last week for the awards ceremony.

“The winning presentation showcased the work of our Racial Justice and Equality Commission and the establishment of the Clean Slate expungement clinic and job fair.”

Gorton said the clinics and job fairs give people with low-level criminal convictions new opportunities for employment, education and housing. Fayette schools superintendent Demetrus Liggins said the presentation included the district’s work towards ensuring students are civically engaged before graduating.

“And what that means is we produce students who understand the importance of being a part of their community, and our students understand that their voice matters, and that their involvement matters.”

According to a news release, the National Civic League’s All-America City Award has celebrated the best in American civic innovation since 1949.
