The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced over $16.8 million in USDA grant funds to rebuild parts of the city of Fleming-Neon’s water system.
The grants are available through USDA’s Calendar Year 2022 Disaster Water Grants program and will help repair and replace various components of the water system, which were damaged during the historic July 2022 flooding.
Travis Burton is the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Kentucky State Director. He says these improvements could help with future floods.
“These improvements will withstand and help them plan for a future there in Fleming-Neon that includes being able to handle whatever comes their way and hopefully be able to allow that community to make plans for future development,” Burton said.
He said people in rural America deserve access to clean, safe drinking water, and it is also important for development.
“In addition to that, it is a vital ingredient to have a strong economy. It's important for businesses, it's important for anyone looking to locate in the area, to live in the area, to provide services in the area,” he said.
