Eastern Kentucky University’s Corbin Regional Campus will host a free, week-long summer camp for children with dyslexia the next three summers. The camp is funded by a $50,000 donation from the Kentucky Association of Health Plans. Kellie Ellis chairs EKU’s Department of Clinical Therapeutic Programs and is a professor of speech language pathology.

“We call our camp Word Detective Reading Camp, and the children that attend will learn how to be word detectives to look for clues like spelling patterns, prefixes or suffixes, to improve their reading and spelling abilities.”

Ellis said the camp is open to rising second, third and fourth-graders.

“Our camp is limited to 25 participants, so we are working with the local school districts there In Corbin to recruit from the children in the community that need additional help.”

According to an EKU news release, the donation will also allow the school to expand community programs and support services at the Corbin campus and service region.
