FEMA is offering guidance on how to clean up and document home damages following severe storms.
The agency recommends taking photos of videos of any damage, including both structural and personal property. It also says to keep samples of damaged carpet, wallpaper, window treatments or furniture, which could affect flood insurance claims.
It’s also recommended to write down serial numbers of any major appliances and to save receipts for repairs and replacements.
The agency also recommends shutting off electricity and gas before cleanup, and to contact repair services to address electric, water and HVAC systems. They recommend contacting your insurance company before signing any cleaning agreement.
FEMA spokesperson Danny Bernardy says the process to send damage reports depends on the county.
“The best move is to visit your county's emergency management website to see how they would like you to send in the documentation or how to handle that process,” he said.
National flood insurance doesn’t cover mold damage. It’s recommended to wear protective gear like gloves, goggles and an N95 mask and act quickly to get rid of any mold.
