Several of the communities hit hardest by the flooding of the Kentucky River are in Jessamine County. Emergency Management Director Johnny Adkins said planning for the flood was difficult, due to changing weather forecasts. Eventually, mandatory evacuations were ordered for communities along the Block 7 pool. Adkins said by late Sunday afternoon, everyone was out.
“We had confirmed that all residents of the community of Brooklyn, Brooklyn Road and Lock Seven Road, Dicks Drive and Camp Nelson Road had been evacuated.”
Adkins said Sunday’s evacuees included 23 people, some of whom were wheelchair-bound, 16 dogs, around 20 cats and a couple of chickens. He said they made two emergency rescues, one of whom was a Brooklyn resident who’d tried to get to dry land in a canoe.
“Due to some blockage, he had to get out into the pool of water somewhat, and his canoe became capsized, and he was able to, as it swept him downstream, cling on to a tree.”
Adkins said the man climbed the tree, called for help and about two hours later, was rescued. He said the man had hypothermia and was taken to a local hospital by Jessamine EMS.
