A freshman state representative from central Kentucky is co-chair of a new Veterans Caucus for the General Assembly. Democrat Adam Moore is an Army vet who represents parts of Fayette and Jessamine counties. He said while there are already legislative committees dealing with veterans, he saw a need for something more flexible featuring House and Senate members.
“We could get together if we wanted to meet at a veterans cemetery, or go to and meet with local VFW chapters, we could have meetings somewhere else, and we could really talk to people and address issues that, you know, are really impacting them out in the community.”
Moore said he asked fellow veteran and freshman lawmaker, Republican Senator Aaron Reed of Shelby County, to co-chair the Veterans Caucus. Reed said yes, House and Senate leadership gave their blessing and Moore said in less than two days, 23 members of the General Assembly joined. He said the caucus will help them better coordinate pro-veteran legislation.
“If we're all just putting a bill out here or there, and there's no coordination between ourselves, there's no coordination between us and stakeholders, then none of those things are going to be done. You'll have 100 good ideas with zero things accomplished. What if we can come together and say, ‘We can do these five things this session?’”
Moore is also the Army representative on the City of Lexington’s Commission on Veterans Affairs.
