Debris removal moving along at a faster pace in flood damaged eastern Kentucky

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

Widespread debris removal is underway in eastern Kentucky communities hit hard by flood damage. Many items can be placed at the curb for pickup.

The State Transportation Cabinet, through competitive bidding, awarded the contract to Ashbritt. The contract calls for the removal of debris from the state right of way in the 13-county flood disaster area.

Eleven counties covered by the national disaster declaration have chosen to join in the contract. The first truck was deployed last Saturday in Whitesburg. As of Thursday, 429 loads had been collected in Breathitt, Floyd, Knott, Letcher, Perry, and Pike Counties.

Debris eligible for pickup includes construction and demolition materials, electronic waste, large appliances, and secured household hazardous wastes. The contract does not cover ordinary household waste or recyclables.
