Lexington Herald-Leader

An exchange of gunfire in Richmond over the weekend left one man dead and a Lexington police officer with minor injuries.  The incident near the campus of Eastern Kentucky University caused officials to issue a “shelter in place” alert.

Students, faculty and staff at Eastern Kentucky University received an alert by email, text and telephone Saturday at 9:54 pm.

That message was followed by a notice that Lexington police had apprehended a suspect near the intersection of the Eastern Bypass and Lancaster Avenue.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports that Lexington Police Officer James Winter had been assaulted by a man wanted on charges of burglary, assault and wanton endangerment.  Following a pursuit that led to Richmond, the suspect and police exchanged gunfire, which killed the suspect who remained unidentified by the newspaper on Sunday.

Lexington Officer Winter was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. In addition to Lexington police, officers from the Madison County Sheriff’s department and state police responded to the incident.  State police will investigate the apprehension and shooting.
