Fayette Health Department Continues To Monitor Federal Prison

Fayette County health officials continue to monitor coronavirus activity at a federal prison facility in Lexington.  The health department announced Friday testing had revealed COVID-19 in 33 inmates and one staff member.

As of this Monday afternoon Kevin Hall with the health department said there were no additional cases reported at the Federal Medical Center.

“And this is something we’re keeping a close eye on because any time you have people who are in an institutional setting like this you run the risk of mass transmission.  And it’s very easy, people are in very close quarters.  It can be difficult for people to take the steps that are necessary to protect themselves and others.

The health department official says he couldn’t speculate on how coronavirus infection emerged within the facility.

Hall added the COVID-19 outbreak at the federal prison was determined through testing including contact tracing.
