Lexington Mayor Imposes New Park Restrictions Due To Covid-19

After citing what she termed “mixed success in our parks over the weekend,” Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton has implemented additional restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The mayor outlined the newest changes in connection with the avirus during a morning briefing Monday. “I’m taking the next step to close all playgrounds, close public restrooms, and close all parking lots connected to our parks.  Our parks remain open to joggers and walkers,” explained Gorton.

Gorton said officials with the Emergency Operations Center are seeking additional personal protection equipment for those battling the virus.  Fire Chief Kristin Chilton said the firefighter who tested positive for COVID 19 is doing well and the isolation of other firefighters is not affecting service.

The city has also suspended door to door collection of yard waste, something Gorton said her office has gotten calls about.  “I understand that.  It’s spring and everybody wants to get out in the yard and clean up.  I’m asking for your patience.  We are not picking up yard waste at residences until we get a firm handle on COVID-19,” noted Gorton.

The mayor said current staffing in waste management carries a focus on garbage and recycling pickups.

Gorton also noted no city events are currently scheduled and no decisions are being made at this time about rescheduling anything.
