STEAM Academy Students Stage A Climate Change Strike

About 300 Lexington students took to the streets Friday afternoon, appealing for action to address climate change concerns.  This protest was in line with recent climate change strikes all around the world.

Lights were turned off in classrooms and then it was a mass exodus from the STEAM Academy.  Students carried signs with messages like “It’s Fall and 90 degrees” and “The Seas So We Are Too.”  Will Harrison, 14, believes the message is getting through. “I think that people that will drive by will be aware that we are trying to make a change, that the younger generation is trying to make a change,” said Harrison.

Harrison said that includes recycling more, cutting down on fossil fuel and car usage and using bikes more.   Ninth Grader Destinee Champs said she believes the evidence of climate change is seen right now.   “It’s fall right now and it’s still 90 degrees and by the time it’s fall we’re using getting ready for winter, having coats on and right now we’re still in summer clothes,” noted Champs.

The loudest cheer came when a bicyclist passed by students lining 6th Street.
