Model Laboratory parents gathered in the school's auditorium Thursday night to learn more about future of critical state funding. Kentucky Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis has told Model administrators the Richmond school needs to implement new financing that doesn’t depend on both both state education funding and tuition.
Rebecca Petrey has two children attending Model and has taught there for 14 years. “I’m hoping for that best possible outcome cause it means a lot to my family, not only do I have kids here, but I have a job,” said Petrey.
Model, the state’s only lab school, is located on the Eastern Kentucky University campus. EKU Vice President David McFaddin says there’s a case to be made for state support, particularly if Model is designated the Commonwealth’s lab school through legislation. “I think it’s going to be inherent for us to educate policy makers about the return on that investment that they would make and the fund sources obviously tied up in the process and how we design that,” said McFaddin.
He told the crowd that work on a legislative remedy is well underway. If unsuccessful in the General Assembly, McFaddin said challenging the state's interpretation about funding in court is a possibility.
