Fayette High Schools to Institute Random Metal Detector Checks

fcps.net

Some students in Fayette County high schools will be going through metal detectors later this month.  The school administration announced new safety policies Tuesday.

Over the past 12 days, three Lexington area students were caught bringing guns to Tates Creek High School.  Earlier this week, another student brought a BB gun to Bryan Station Middle School.

Superintendent Manny Caulk says, after Thanksgiving, mobile metal detectors will be used at high schools for random checks.  “We’re looking to make sure it is regular and that it is frequent enough to serve as a general deterrent,” said Caulk.

School officials are also encouraging family members to check students’ backpacks, jackets, and pockets before they head off to school.

In these recent cases, students told police they had weapons with them because of situations outside of school.  Caulk says students need to have someone in the school system they can trust to report safety-related concerns.  The anonymous tip line program in Fayette schools is also being expanded.?
