London City Council effort to remove mayor from office chaotic – and unresolved

London Mayor Randall Weddle is the subject of removal proceedings by members of the city council.

London Mayor Randall Weddle is the subject of removal proceedings by members of the city council.

At times, the crowd in the London Community Center was so loud that city council members and others attempting to speak had to wait. However, 14 charges against Mayor Randall Weddle were read into the record.

“Mayor Weddle violated the law by altering and otherwise rejecting contracts without consent or notification to the legislative body. Mayor Weddle improperly released a phone call between a victim of a crime and Officer Hale, as evidenced by notice from Hale's attorney. Shortly thereafter, he improperly dismissed the officer.”

The council voted 5 to 1 to hold a public hearing. Weddle said that wasn’t enough.

“Let's get this on the record. Every accusation that you guys have made, you have a due diligence toward the KRS to start an investigation, exploratory subcommittee. How come that has not been done on any of this?”

A check of state law for removal of city officials in home rule class cities like London showed a subcommittee is not required, just a hearing during which Weddle can respond to each count. Removal would require a unanimous vote by the city council, which the mayor can appeal in circuit court. The meeting was adjourned before the hearing date was set. Neither Weddle nor council members responded to an interview request.
