The impact of federal funding cuts could have an impact on higher education in Kentucky.

Cuts to grants from the National Institute of Health could cost the University of Kentucky $40 million worth of health research funding. Those cuts have been temporarily paused by a federal judge.

Council of Postsecondary Education President Aaron Thompson says that could impact research on opioid addiction and cancer research.

“We don't know what will make it, what will not make it, what you know what the impact will be, until we know exactly how they plan on implementing some of the orders they've sent out so far when in some cases, they've been put on hold,” Thompson said.

The Council of Postsecondary Education has been monitoring the status of those grants in the meantime. Council President Aaron Thompson says those grants being cut could impact the amount of research talent in Kentucky.

“We would lose, obviously, have to lose some of those talents, unless we come up with money from other places,” Thompson said. “Obviously, we don't want to lose that talent because it's really losing an essential piece of a highly educated workforce in Kentucky.”

More with Thompson can be heard on a future edition of Eastern Standard early next month.
