Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Allen Blair said an increasing number of people are showing up at regional drivers’ licensing offices to get their REAL ID by May 7. He says that’s not a deadline, but rather the date when the TSA and other agencies will begin requiring them for commercial airline travel and entrance to various federal installations. Blair said other types of IDs will work for airlines.
“There are other forms of Real ID, including a passport, passport card, global entry card, I know some people have that if you travel internationally, all of those are considered real forms of Real ID, including Department of Defense ID, military IDs and even those issued to dependents.”
Blair said the state doesn’t mandate REAL IDs.
“If you don't have to fly right away, if you're not planning to board a plane, you know, in the next couple of months, you have time. You don't have to rush right out and try to, you know, wait in line to get the real ID before May 7.”
Blair said proof of residence and Social Security are required for REAL IDs.
