This home in Pike County's Stopover community is one of nearly 400 destroyed or badly damaged by the February flood.

Pike County officials are hosting a question-and-answer session Tuesday to explain the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s voluntary home buyout program. Kentucky Emergency Management officials will also attend. Jimmy Kiser, Pike County’s flood plain coordinator, said the buyout process for February flood victims will be expedited.

“You get on the list. KY EM is going to write the grant. Somebody will come get in touch with you and let you know. And then we'll send somebody out and they appraise your home pre-0disaster, then the offer will be made, then you do the closings.”

Pike Emergency Management Director Nee Jackson said the February flood destroyed at least 23 homes and caused major damage to 344. Kiser emphasized the program is voluntary until the very end.

“You can get your home appraised; offer be made. You can sign all papers and be down here at the closing and ready to reach a check across the desk. And you can say, ‘Well, I've changed my mind.’”

Kiser said homeowners with flood insurance can receive up to $30,000 in increased cost of compliance funds to get their home elevated. Tuesday night’s Q&A begins at 6 in the Pike County Public Library’s Lee Avenue branch.
