Two new LG&E/KU EV fast chargers donated to the Lake Cumberland Tourist Commission will officially open Monday.

Two fast-charging stations for electric vehicles officially open Monday at the Lake Cumberland Tourist Commission, in Russell County. Danielle Wilson, the commission’s executive director, said the new EV chargers will have a significant impact on tourism.

“We have had so many phone calls already wanting to know that have heard about it or drove by and seen it, but they had the covers on, and now they're like, you know, ‘Is this open? You know, we're playing a trip, and we have to plan our trip around where we can charge.’”

According to a U.S. Department of Energy map, the EV charging stations closest to the Lake Cumberland Tourist Commission are in Monticello and Somerset – each more than a half-hour away.

“Directly from my office, which is right in the middle of 127 in Russell County, you can hit Jamestown marina or Lake Cumberland marina or state dock marina in 20 minutes.”

According to LG&E/KU, which donated the equipment, the fast chargers will charge a vehicle in 15 to 90 minutes, and they’re free to use until mid-October. LG&E/KU is a financial supporter of WEKU.
