Home heating assistance program makes more funding available

Stu Johnson

More funding is being made available for people who need help heating their homes. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP is starting its crisis component. Starting Monday people with eviction or disconnect notices or those who are within 48 hours of losing heat can apply for help.

Karen Atkins is spokesperson for Kentucky River Foothills Community Development Council. She said anyone who needs financial assistance should be comfortable asking for it.

“We have all felt the pinch of inflation recently. Food, gas, other goods have increased and for low income individuals and families, these uncertain times are creating greater challenges to meeting essential needs,” said Atkins.

Low-income households can apply for assistance each time they face a crisis situation, until they reach their maximum benefit.

Atkins said people are encouraged to ask for help as soon as they need it.

“This is one of those tricky situations where, unlike subsidy, you have to have a disconnect, an eviction notice or be without. And it’s really not that cold out yet, but it will be soon,” said Atkins.

The LIHEAP funds will be available through March 31, or until they run out. The assistance is available through all Community Action Agencies across the state.
