Education in Kentucky could look a little different in the near future. The “United We Learn” initiative is helping to develop a broad vision of what Kentuckians think education should look like.
Lu Young is the director of the Kentucky Board of Education. She said there is a going to be a focus on what is called “Deeper Learning.”
“Deeper than a more traditional, test based, test focused curriculum and student experience. Under “No Child Left Behind” we really pivoted toward that kind of learning and we heard voices from Kentucky, especially families and students saying that’s not what the experiences for the students of the future should be.”
She said personalizing how teachers work with students could be the key to better learning.
“Changing that relationship to a coaching and mentoring relationship where teachers get the facilitate the learning, it might look very different from one learner to the next. That may be a better way to think about equity and how to meet student’s needs.”
You can hear from Lu Young this week on Eastern Standard.
