Some federal income tax filers in Kentucky may be able to take advantage of a tax policy change. There’s been a modification in the federal earned income tax credit. Stacy Engle is the Internal Revenue Service spokeswoman for Kentucky. Engle said previously, the age limit for filers without children was limited to people ages 25 to 64.
“The earned income tax credit has been expanded to include taxpayers that are 19 years old with no children through however old. There’s no age limit."
The IRS representative said more than 20% of eligible Kentuckians don’t claim the earned income tax credit.
During tax season some people are looking to take advantage of others. Officials with the Internal Revenue Service are advising taxpayers to be on the lookout for phishing scams. Engle said the IRS doesn’t typically call, but that can’t be ruled out.
“If you get letters from the IRS, open them. You may need them to fix your account or to complete your tax return this year. But, we generally do not call unless we’ve already sent you correspondence through the mail,” explained Engle.
Engle said about 90% of all data thefts begin with phishing emails. She noted be skeptical of what she termed “out of the blue” emails from the IRS which include links to download or go to another site.
