Kentucky residents can sign up for a new license plate showing support for an initiative to diversify eastern Kentucky's economy.
State officials say the new plate approved by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet features the SOAR eagle logo and an eastern Kentucky mountain scene. SOAR stands for Shaping Our Appalachian Region.
Transportation officials say a minimum of 900 applications for the special license plate must be received before the plate can be produced. The minimum number must be reached within two years.
The cost to apply is $25. Those checks are held — but not cashed — by the SOAR organization until all 900 applications are received. Once applications reach the minimum and the plates are ready, those who applied will receive postcards letting them know the plate is available.
