Keeneland And Fasig-Tipton Announce New Testing Restrictions

Known as “the most exciting two minutes in sports,” the Kentucky Derby, in its traditional sense, will not run this Saturday.  But, new details are emerging on the sales side of Thoroughbred racing.

Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton officials have announced restrictions on the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids and bronchodilators, including Clenbuterol, for all horses sold at sales conducted by these two major auction houses.  The latest reforms, effective immediately, are in addition to restrictions put in place earlier this year for two-year old sales held in Lexington.

Keeneland President Bill Thomason and Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning Junior released a joint statement.  It reads, in part, “We remain united in our advocacy to serve the best interest of the horse. The use of medication is the most critical issue facing the Thoroughbred industry, and one that threatens the confidence of both the marketplace and the public.”

While the run for the roses won’t take place this weekend, 13 past Triple Crown winners are set to break from the post in a virtual derby Saturday afternoon.
