This Wednesday night marks the start of the 2019-2020 season for the Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team. The home contest against Northern Kentucky is also the debut of EKU Head Coach Samantha Williams.
Coach Williams comes to Richmond after spending time in Louisville helping to lead the Cardinals to 8 straight NCAA appearances. She inherits an Eastern program which went 2-27 last year. Williams said her team is progressing but she will advise them to not even look at the scoreboard during games. “I understand that it’s a process and all we can do is all we can do. Come to work every day. Come to practice every day focusing on getting better. The results will take care of themselves,” said Williams
The first-time head coach said she’s confident that she is well prepared for the job at EKU. She added molding a team involves both on and off the court activities. “So I’d say the biggest challenge is winning habits, whether it be how you talk, what kind of work ethic do you have to have, what kind of sleep, what do you eat? Those have been the biggest challenges. Teaching them the winning habits that you have to have and that talk is cheap, but you have to put in the work.”
Tipoff for the EKU-NKU game is 7:00 Wednesday.
