Keeneland Spring Meet Opens This Weekend Under Possible Winterlike Conditions

Stu Johnson

The April tradition that is the Keeneland Spring Meet starts this weekend in Lexington.  It may begin under brisk, if not downright, chilly conditions.

There is the possibility of some snow as part of opening weekend festivities at Keeneland.  Keeneland Spokeswoman Amy Gregory says it’s happened before, even within the last decade. No matter the weather, the Toyota Bluegrass Stakes and Central Bank Ashland Stakes are expected to run Saturday afternoon. “Those are nationally prominent preps for the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks.  So, if you come out on Saturday, you’ll see a lot of horses that are making their last start before they move on to Churchill Downs,” said Gregory.

If accumulating snow falls in the bluegrass this weekend, race day decisions may need to be made.  “We always have the safety of our horses and riders in mind, so we’re continually monitoring the race track, working with our race track crew to make sure our conditions are safe before we would allow racing to go on,” added Gregory

Amy Gregory says Friday’s opening day at Keeneland is also College Scholarship Day where the track will be giving away a record $30,000 in scholarship money to college students.
