Tips Offered For Planting "Victory Gardens"

A Wartime effort is being resurrected as Kentuckians battle coronavirus. The Kentucky Agriculture Department along with the help of University of Kentucky are promoting the establishment of “victory gardens.”

Kentucky Nutrition Education Program Director Marisa Aull says the effort is similar to a message sent out during World War I and II. “Most important it was for food security, but it was also to bring people together, rally around an idea of that we were going to be self-sufficient self-sustaining and victorious in our efforts,” said Aull

Aull added for some, the idea may be to supplement grocery shopping.  The nutrition educator said some Kentuckians may be hesitant to visit grocery stores right now.  “There’s really something for everyone.  So whether or not you want to be self-sustaining and not have to rely on going to the grocery store or going somewhere else.  Or if you just want to get started and maybe and ease your shopping budget a bit,” explained Aull.

Aull noted county extension offices across the state will have victory garden toolkits with such items as vegetable seeds, calendars, and recipe cards.
