Plan For Capitol Monument Honoring A Woman Announced

Governor Beshear admits questions remain about how the return of thousands of college students to campuses across Kentucky will affect coronavirus activity.  The University of Kentucky this week began testing returning students.

Beshear said it’s understandable young people will want to reconnect.  He noted it’s also important they hear the message about proper socializing. “We need to try to provide the best atmosphere to make the best decisions.  We need to make sure we’re doing from an enforcement end what we can to reduce the number of places they could go to make bad decisions.  And then we need to be consistently talking to them as adults,” said Beshear.

The governor said the Kentucky Fair Board could make an announcement Thursday about plans for the state fair scheduled to start August 20th.  Beshear announced 546 new coronavirus cases and one additional death.

Just over a year from now the west end of the state capitol in Frankfort is expected to be home to the first monument honoring a woman.  Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman said the unveiling of the Nettie Depp monument is planned August 21st of next year.

Depp was a teacher, principal, and then elected school superintendent in 1913, seven years before women earned full voting rights in Kentucky.

Coleman noted recognition of Depp will carry an impact today.  “A failure to observe women in places of honor narrows the vision of our youth and reveals a lack of understanding of American history regarding women’s work, sacrifice and the immeasurable and timeless contribution to society’s advancement,” explained Coleman.

In Lexington Thursday, the Breaking the Bronze Ceiling statue is expected to be installed at the corner of Vine and Mill Streets.  The five 20 foot tall metal figures representing suffragists commemorates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote.  The statue, by Arizona artist Barbara Grygutis, should be in place by noon Thursday.?
