Lexington Government Offices Will Reopen June 11

On Thursday, Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said the public can visit most government offices beginning Friday, June 11. The Fayette County jail will not be open to visitors until July 6. Only one visit will be allowed per week.

Lexington city employees are not required to be vaccinated. Both employees and the public may choose to wear masks, after Kentucky’s mandate expires June 11.

“We know that we are getting very close here in Fayette County to community immunity, what used to be called herd immunity. And we’re about 9 percentage points away from that,” Gorton said. “We feel very comfortable that we will be able to accommodate the public and it will be on the honor system.”

Senior centers, which have been closed since March 2020, will also reopen. Class sizes will be reduced, but director Kristy Stambaugh said the centers are vital to the community.

“One of the beauties of all centers focused on health and wellness and physical activity and getting out and being with other people, having a meal, sharing a cup of coffee with a friend. And just being together, not in your four walls,” Stambaugh said.

About 56% of people 12 and over have been vaccinated in Fayette County.
