Radon testing would be required at Kentucky’s licensed child care centers once every five years under a bill before the full House. The legislation got the backing of the House Health and Family Services Committee last week.
Western Kentucky Representative Michael Meredith said grant money could help with mitigation work. “To allow federal, state, and local grants to go into a fund for radon mitigation and testing as well with priority to need based applications in areas where there are child care deserts or in programs where a high proportion of child care assisted programs exists,” said Meredith.
Middlesboro Representative Adam Bowling asked about the number of radon mitigation companies in Kentucky. “Are there enough radon mitigation contractors that can get around to every single child care facility within a year, because if they don’t, someone’s license comes up for renewal and they’ve not had this test, they might be forced to close and not get the renewal and children won’t be able to go to the centers,” asked Bowling.
Brandi Canton with the Kentucky Association of Radon Professional told lawmakers that there should be enough mitigation companies. Depending on the size of the facility, she said the test cost can range from a couple hundred dollars to a thousand dollars.?
