Bluegrass ADD Assists In Innovative Broadband Approach

bgadd.org

Using waterlines to distribute broadband technology is considered part of the formula to wire-up more homes in central Kentucky.

Bluegrass Area Development District Director David Duttlinger discussed that possibility during a briefing before a Lexington City Council committee last week.  Duttlinger said it was under review for the neighboring city of Cynthiana.

“We were going to complete a loop around the city and then we were going to get the trunkline fiber to the water towers and then from the water towers they were going to do direct cellular transmission to be able to boost it out into the rural areas.  That’s what we were planning and we’re still talking about it,” said Duttlinger.

Duttlinger said the city had been looking to a National Science Foundation grant to help with the broadband project.  He said that didn’t occur, but state or local funds might be used for such distribution.  Duttlinger noted Danville officials were also investigating the waterline option.
