Rep. Barr Seeking Fix for Flood Insurance Program

barr.house.gov

As thousands in Louisiana cope with historic flooding, Kentucky Congressman Andy Barr says the federal government’s approach to assistance needs attention.

Citizens in a portion of eastern Kentucky experienced loss of life and significant damage from flash flooding last summer.  Barr believes more effort needs to focus on how federal funds are distributed, “We need to make sure that we target the relief to those individuals who are truly the victims of these natural disasters.”

Barr says more pre-planning needs to go into budgeting for natural disaster relief.  The GOP lawmaker says the nation’s flood insurance program is $23 dollars in debt and needs fixing.  “One of the problems with the national flood insurance program right now is we are actually subsidizing unwise and risky building practices in flood prone areas,” explained Barr.

Barr says he will be working to promote flood program improvements over the next year.?
