A special program from Kentucky's premier political speech-making event kicks off Kentucky Educational Television's coverage of the fall 2012 election.
KET's Bill Goodman and Renee Shaw host Fancy Farm 2012 from the grounds of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Graves County, Kentucky Monday evening at 8:00 on the statewide TV network. The audio from the broadcast will air on 88.9 FM WEKU and its network of stations Tuesday morning at 11:00.
Guests for the program, which will replace the weekly broadcast of Kentucky Tonight, include political party activists, pundits, and journalists who offer analysis of this year's races.
Speakers at the Saturday picnic included U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, elected state officials, and legislative candidates. Agriculture Commissioner James Comer served as the master of ceremonies.
Every year since the early 1880s, St. Jerome Catholic Church in the small town of Fancy Farm, near Mayfield in Graves County, has hosted the annual community event. At some point, political candidates began to see the Fancy Farm Picnic as a good chance to meet, greet, and stump for votes.
A platform for speaking was soon added and, by the middle of the 20th century, Fancy Farm had become the unofficial kickoff event for the fall campaigns.
