Shaping Our Appalachian Region Summit Underway in Pikeville

Shaping Our Appalachian Region or SOAR is once again brining hundreds of people together to discuss ways to move the eastern Kentucky region forward economically and socially.

The 2018 SOAR Summit is being held at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville. This year’s theme is “There is a future in Appalachia.”

The two-day event includes a session with a keynote presentation on health and technology. The Summit will also showcase more than 100 innovative solutions from across Appalachia Kentucky.

SOAR Director Jared Arnett says the annual event offers extensive time to network with people and organizations. “We want people to be overwhelmed to experience the proof that things are working . Be inspired. If you’re inspired then you’re gonna go back and do something. You’re gonna change something,” said Arnett.

The Summit’s main program is Friday, and will include remarks from SOAR Co-Chairs Congressman Hal Rogers and Governor Matt Bevin. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Anne Hazlett is expected to make an announcement tomorrow regarding opioid treatment.
