Brailen Weaver appeared in U.S. District Court in Lexington on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to an attempted bank robbery last month that left two people dead.

A grand jury indicted the 18-year-old last week in the April 30 shooting at the U.S. Bank branch in Berea.

He is charged on separate counts in the deaths of Breanna Edwards and Brian Switzer, as well as attempted armed robbery of the bank.

If convicted, Weaver could be sentenced to death or life in prison. His trial could take place as early as July 28, although U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Stinnett said that date was likely to change.

U.S. District Judge Claria Horn Boom will preside over the trial.

Weaver, of Somerset, is being held without bond in the Woodford County Detention Center.
