EKU’s Model Laboratory School is getting a new campus amid a new educational push from the university.
The school is a K-through-12 institution also meant to train teachers and house education research. It’s also the only such school in Kentucky.
The school’s new campus will be on the south side of EKU.
John Williamson is the model school’s superintendent. He says they’re pushing for a wider partnership with the college.
“The new model lab school will provide immersive, intentional clinical experiences that are a hallmark of the EKU teacher education experience,” Williamson said.
A pilot program for freshmen is also launching that will house entry-level education classes at the model school. A new school of education is also being formed within EKU’s College of Education and Applied Human Sciences.
Elizabeth Smith is the dean of that college. She says that means more opportunities for research.
“A lot of education research can feel a little bit divorced from what's happening in classrooms, but when we're putting teachers and faculty together to work on research, we're gonna find what works in education and be able to share that across the state and the nation,” Smith said.
The campus is scheduled to be completed by fall of 2027.
