Influenza cases continue on an upward trend in Fayette County

Stu Johnson

Influenza continues to be a prominent disease in parts of Kentucky. Christina King is with the Fayette County Health Department. King said the number of flu cases reported last week was almost a doubling of the previous week.

“We have 724 total flu cases this season already. You know, we’ve not seen numbers like that in almost three years. But, those are just the lab-confirmed cases. That only represents a small percentage of the actual flu cases that are in Lexington,” said King.

King said the central Kentucky community is experiencing a return to the flu levels before COVID came to Kentucky. The Lexington Health Department official added area residents can get their flu and COVID shots now and see added protection in time for the upcoming holidays.

“Now is the time to get that flu shot, to get that COVID shot, the COVID boosters so that you’re not spreading these illnesses to friends and family over the holidays,” said King.

King said same-day appointments for flu and COVID shots can be made Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

King noted that reported coronavirus cases have been running fairly steady the last few weeks in the 150 range of new cases. She stresses there are many at-home test results not reported to health officials.
