The Lexington City Council has been meeting virtually since last spring. But, on more than one occasion the 15 council members have discussed returning to in-person meetings at city hall.
Tuesday’s work session included a presentation on health protocols when the governing body returns to Council Chambers. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton favors allowing more time for vaccinations.
“If it was up to me personally, I would wait until we are sure that most of our community has had the option to be vaccinated. It’s not like we’re holding meetings outside in the open air, right?” asked Gorton.
Council Member Jennifer Reynolds first offered a motion to return May 25th. After further discussion, council members opted to schedule a return to in-person meetings at city hall when they return from summer break on August tenth. Council Member Preston Worley feels it’s important to set a timeline. “Let’s set a date and let’s get all of our staff and let’s get a lot of people comfortable with the policy’s gonna be and know this is the date that’s happening. Let’s get there and let’s get there in our minds and let’s make it happen,” said Worley.
City Law Commissioner Susan Speckart went over the suggested health protocols for a return to Council Chambers. They include six foot spacing and masking along with capacity limitations and temperature checking.
