Lexington’s city council has overwhelmingly given final approval to a $345 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year. One item Thursday night did generate significant discussion prior to the vote.
Several council members offered high marks for the budget and the budget building process. Council member Kevin Stinnett says significant gains are seen in funding for paving, police and fire, storm water, and code enforcement. “Really worked with council before the budget came out to make sure we had in there what the citizens are calling us for,” said Stinnett.
Several council members are still not comfortable with seven million dollars to go toward a proposed youth sport complex. The 130 acre project is still in the ‘consideration’ phase. Council member Jennifer Mossotti tried to remove the item, citing $100 million in deferred park maintenance. “It just seems to me that we’re kind of taking our eye off the ball here on what we need to focus on,” noted Mossotti.
The council ultimately voted 14 to 1 in favor of the budget with the sports complex money included. It also funds a pay raise for employees outside of collective bargaining and a new fire station in Masterson Station.
