Mass Grave offers Battlefield's Best Vista

In hindsight, we know the Battle of Perryville permanently removed Kentucky from the Confederacy.  But, it was a Southern victory and, at the time, the issue was in doubt.

Today is the 150th anniversary of the largest, bloodiest battle ever fought in the Commonwealth.  This morning, we tour the battlefield, which still lies among rural, rolling hills, situated southwest of Lexington.  Joan House is the state historic site’s preservation and program coordinator.

Their websitesays before October 8th “was over, nearly 25-hundred men lay dead and another five-thousand wounded men filled every barn, church and house in the area.”

As House overlooks the battleground, while standing atop a mass grave, she describes the vista.
