Governor Beshear: Mail-In Voting Is Needed In Commonwealth

wkms.org

Governor Beshear says he plans to have firm reopening dates for businesses included in phase two of his overall plan to restart the state’s economy by week’s end.

During his nightly briefing Wednesday, the governor said that will include restaurants across the bluegrass state.  He’s worked with the Kentucky Restaurant Association in developing safety guidelines.  “I will say the association has given us some good thoughts.  I’m not sure we agree with everything in them, but those conversations are ongoing,” said Beshear.

Beshear said phase two is slated to begin in June.  He noted also included in the phase two re-opening are movie theaters and gymnasiums.  The governor said he also hopes to see child care options available then.

Governor Beshear is making a strong pitch for voting by mail in next month’s primary elections.  With coronavirus activity throughout the state, the governor hopes most voters opt to request an absentee ballot instead of in-person voting.  “I’m going to be up here once the portal’s ready telling everybody, every single day how to request and fill out the absentee ballot.  And I’m going to encourage everybody that can to fill out that absentee ballot.  It’s by far the safest way,” explained Beshear.

An online portal for all voters to request an absentee is being created.  Beshear said registered voters must still make the request as required by law.  The governor added the reason for the request can be the coronavirus.  Kentucky presidential primary elections are set for June 23rd.?  Beshear reported 159 new coronavirus cases and eight deaths during the briefing.
