UK Presentation Focuses on Hazing and Alcohol Issues

The University of Kentucky is addressing hazing and alcohol abuse among student organizations.  The UK Board of Trustees got a briefing during their December meeting.

UK Dean of Students Nick Kehrwald says the level of hazing on the Lexington campus is not as significant as seen on a national scale.  Still, he says concerns over alcohol use do persist.  Kehrwald says the university is rolling out an alcohol skills training program this spring. “The foundations of this program are really in motivational interviewing, having students think about their alcohol use, but also has it pertains to their academic success,” said Kehrwald.

Kehrwald told trustees the more than 6000 students involved in fraternities and sororities at UK represent about 28 percent of the overall undergraduate student population.  The university is also working to increase retention within Greek organizations.
