Transylvania University officials have broken ground for a $4.5 million renovation project on the Lexington campus.
The work will center on the long-standing Haupt Humanities Building.
The project is aimed at modernizing the classroom building, which will be renamed the Carpenter Academic Center, in honor of lead donors Pete and Marilyn Carpenter.
Over the next year and a half, the building will see upgraded classrooms, student gathering spaces, and new technologies.
Every Transylvania student takes at least one class in the 57-year -old building. The $4 million-plus renovation is intended to help ensure teaching spaces are advanced, flexible, and sized for active learning.
