Lexington Hosts Auto Theft Investigators For A Regional Conference

Police detectives along with representatives from car rental, insurance, and manufacturer businesses are all meeting in Lexington this week.  Coming from several eastern U.S. states, they are part of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators.

Southeast Regional Chapter President Nathan McGanty said many car thefts remain a crime of opportunity. “You leave your car running, you get out to pump your gas, they call it slider.  They slide in your car and take it while you’re pumping gas.  Another big thing is leaving your keys in the car or they have two cars in the driveway, they leave the key to one in the other car and they’re unlocked.  So, when people come to steal stuff out of your car, they find the key and ‘oh let me take your car,” said McGanty.

McGanty said police in various states often see different issues when it comes to auto theft.  The Chesapeake Virginia police sergeant says the aim is always to stay ahead of thieves when it comes to using technology to commit a vehicle-related crime.?
