Lexington police are investigating the cause and motive for broken windows at the building housing the city's daily newspaper. There is evidence that the damage was a result of gunfire.
According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, windows on three levels of the Midland Avenue side of the downtown building were damaged. Three were shattered and two on the upper level of the press room showed damage consistent with small caliber bullet penetration.
No employees were injured or near the area where the damage occurred since the press room is no longer in use. Police have confirmed they are investigating the Sunday morning incident as criminal mischief.
Herald-Leader Publisher Rufus Friday said the paper is taking steps to shore up the windows and increase security. In a published report, Friday called the incident, "a senseless act of vandalism."
