A 19-year-old Cincinnati man has been arrested in connection with machete attack Friday morning in the Transylvania University coffee shop.

Mitchell Adkins, a former Transy student, is charged with first degree assault, three counts of wanton endangerment, and assault fourth degree.

The violent attack on Transylvania's campus in downtown Lexington took place in the school’s coffee shop.  Transy Vice President of Marketing and Communications Michele Sparks says the room was full of students, “A former student entered our coffee shop on campus and proceeded to attack people who were in the coffee shop and injured one of our current students."

19-year-old Mitchell Adkins of Cincinnati has been arrested on assault and wanton endangerment charges.  Sparks says one victim was taken to UK hospital.  Another person was treated at the scene.

Adkins was hospitalized with self-inflicted wounds.  Sparks says several witnesses to the crime indicated the attacker was asking about political preference during the attack.

Classes were cancelled and all Transylvania students were relocated into the athletic complex where President Seamus Carey addressed them.

Sparks says the campus community had recently undergone active shooter training and the crowded shop emptied quickly.  The University spokeswoman says quick campus and Lexington Metro Police response likely prevented more injuries.
