Charles Bertram cbertram@herald-leader.com

Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting involving a Lexington police officer.  The incident took place around 11:30 Tuesday night.

An officer was investigating a suspicious car near a motel off Stanton Way off Newtown Pike, near I-75.  While doing so, he discharged his firearm, striking a 26-year-old suspect.  The subject was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. The officer was not injured.

Police Chief Mark Barnard told reporters at the scene the man was speaking to officers at the hospital.  The officer involved in the shooting was wearing a boy camera and that video will be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

The officer, a three-year veteran of the department, has been placed on administrative leave.?

Chief Barnard confirmed with reporters that police have been doing increased patrols of the area where the shooting occurred because of complaints about narcotics and other suspicious activity in the area.
