Four Arrested in Connection With Burglary Attempt on EKU Campus

Police on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University are investigating an attempted burglary on campus that caused a campus-wide alert.

EKU officials say the call came in around 2:30 yesterday (Sun) morning of a person trying to break into the Grand Campus apartments at the corner of Lancaster Ave and Barnes Mill Rd.

A safety alert was sent out telling students to stay in place and seek shelter.

A few minutes later, another alert was sent out saying a person tried to break into the apartments with a gun, then threatened to shoot through the door before leaving.

EKU Police detained four suspects and have identified them as: 

Zachary G. Beaton, charged with: Burglary 1st degree; 

Darious Bryant; charged with Burglary 1st; 

Shyheim Lee, charged with Burglary 1st, Criminal Mischief 3rd; and 

Dashawn Moncrease, charged with Wanton Endangerment 1st, Burglary 1st, Possession of Firearm by a convicted felon and Receiving Stolen Property.

All suspects are lodged at the Madison County Detention Center. None of the four suspects are students at EKU.

The residents of the apartment unit that was burglarized were safely relocated from the apartment and are receiving support and assistance from EKU Housing and Student Services.

University officials are encouraging anyone with additional information on this case, or any suspicious activity to contact EKU Police by calling 911 during an emergency or at 859-622-1111.
