Students, teachers, and staff at Lexington’s Lafayette High School are comforting each other following the loss of a 15-year-old student. Trinity Gay is being remembered as a gifted athlete who touched many on and off the track.
The daughter of Olympic runner Tyson Gay, herself a rising track star, died early Sunday morning after being hit by gunfire exchanged between two cars in a restaurant parking lot.
Lafayette High School Principal Bryne Jacobs says he was devastating by the news of Gay’s death. He says her influence at the school will last, “We are proud of the legacy that she left and we are just heartbroken that she is not in our building anymore.”
Trinity was known for her track speed, but Family Consumer Science teacher Rhonda Mullins says she also took interest in her community. Mullins says last week Trinity took part in a meeting about a Halloween community event at the school. “She was just up there writing on the board and she had all of these ideas,” said Mullins. “She was so excited about that.”
Police have arrested 3 people in connection with Trinity Gay’s death. An 8:00 pm vigil, open to the public, is planned for Monday evening at Lafayette High School.?
